(Thursday, August 29, 1968; during the 1968 Democratic National Convention) — Senator Edmund Muskie accepted the Democratic vice presidential nomination tonight at Chicago’s International Amphitheatre, calling on the Democratic party to respond to the protests of youth by attempting to build a society in which there would be equal respect for all as well as respect for law and order.

Earlier in the evening, Muskie was nominated on the ticket with Vice President Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota by defeating Julian Bond, who at age 28 was constitutionally ineligible to the office, 1942.5 to 48.5 votes.

Humphrey, nominated the previous evening, would accept the Democratic presidential nomination later this evening.
