(Sunday, June 23, 1940) — Scottish painter and musician Stuart Sutcliffe, better known as the original bass guitarist of the English rock band The Beatles, was born Stuart Fergusson Victor Sutcliffe today at the Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Sutcliffe family moved to Liverpool, England, in 1943.

Sutcliffe was a member of The Beatles from January 1960 to July 1961. He died Apr. 10, 1962, in Hamburg, West Germany, at the age of 21, of a brain hemorrhage.
