(Thursday, June 24, 1880) — Major General Winfield Scott Hancock of Pennsylvania was nominated President of the United States today at the 1880 Democratic National Convention meeting at Music Hall in Cincinnati.

Hancock won the nomination on the second ballot after defeating former Governor Thomas A. Hendricks of Indiana by a vote of 705-30.

Former Representative William Hayden English of Indiana was nominated for vice president after former governor Richard M. Bishop of Ohio withdrew.

The Hancock-English Democratic ticket would face the Republican ticket of James A. Garfield-Chester A. Arthur (nominated June 8, 1880) in the 1880 presidential election.
